Week in Review: September 24-28
Much of this week was spent in social health. In academics, we multiplied decimals by whole numbers and learned about Earth's spheres. We were also lucky enough to have a guest speaker from the International Raptor and Falconry Center. Students learned about different raptors' biology, discussed raptor conservation, and were able to meet a real Harris' hawk.

Looking Ahead
Next week, we'll be practicing for conferences and preparing portfolios. We'll also be working on division with decimals and beginning our fall social studies unit on Colonial America and the Revolutionary War.

Week in Review: September 17-21
Picture day! We did it! Everyone looked great and hopefully we'll get pictures back sometime in October. Keep an eye out.

Thanks goes out to the Wolf Recovery Project who came to visit the fifth grade classes to discuss the endangered Mexican Gray Wolf. What a great way to put a cap on our endangered species research and presentations which we completed this week.

Looking Ahead
We ran out of time this week and weren't able to visit the pond as planned. Our research of Earth's spheres and poetry connection will take place next week for sure. It should be beautiful! Much of next week will be spent in social health.

Great job, Anthony and Hailey. Both students helped classmates in need and brightened a fellow fifth grader's day. Thanks!

Week in Review: September 10-14
This week was spent using centimeter unit cubes to "discover" the formula for finding the volume of rectangular prisms. We also researched local threatened animal species and began a presentation in Google Classrooms to share with classmates. In true Magnet fashion, we began our Magnet Monday classes and students embarked on an exploration of their areas of interest in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, or math). Reading intervention and enrichment also began and will take place on Mondays through Thursdays.

Looking Ahead
One more week of spelling before we take a little homework break. In science, we'll be learning about the different interactions of Earth's spheres. On Thursday, we'll be visiting the pond for inspiration along with our new knowledge of Earth's spheres to create science themed poetry.

Week in Review: September 4-7
What a busy short week! We tackled rounding and a math test as well as planning for and writing short stories. We are nearing the end of Night of the Spadefoot Toad and the excitement is building!

Looking Ahead
We'll be back to our regular spelling routine next week. Yes! In math, we'll be taking a break from place value work to focus a bit more on measurement and volume, and in science we'll be researching some endangered species in our region. The plan is to finish Night of the Spadefoot Toads. As a team, we'll keep working on direction following and focus in class. Magnet Monday starts!

Thanks to the many of you who joined together at open house. It felt good to see so many familiar faces. I hope you all have an enjoyable 3 day weekend spending time with family and friends.

Week in Review: August 27-31
This week in academics we spent time using place value to help us write numbers in expanded from and compare decimals. To connect our literature study Night of the Spadefoot Toad to writing, students began planning the conflict, plot, and characters for their own original short story. In life science, we began a unit on ecosystems and spent time in our school garden observing biotic and abiotic factors. Later in the week we continued the study of biotic factors by discussing the role of the sun, producers, consumers, and decomposers in an ecosystem.

Looking Ahead
No homework next week! We'll use the extra time to finish up our place value unit in math and practice rounding decimals both on a number line using a "shortcut." There will be a unit test near the end of the week. We hope to write, revise, and type the short stories that students planned this week. In addition to our academics, we'll be emphasizing teamwork, kindness, and how to be respectful students.
